Teacher/AdvisorThe Discovery School, a small mixed age learning community in Lewiston, Maine, has a Fall vacancy for a part-full time staff member who is responsible, energetic, organized, empathetic, compassionate, playful, patient, positive and honest. He or she must must care about and deeply respect children, be excited to take initiative and grow our school, love to learn, and be able to share decisionmaking power with young children and other school community members. The ideal candidate must have experience with children ages 4-13, a positive attitude, diverse interests and the knowledge and skills (or motivation to aquire them) in conflict resolution, communication, organization, alternative education, unschooling and free schools.
The selected staff member will carry out many tasks at the school including helping kids resolve conflict; sharing skills & interests; teaching classes; playing & laughing; planning activities based on student interests; interacting with prospective families; researching with students; identifying community resources to build upon student interests; cleaning; attending meetings; communicating with parents; supervising volunteers; serving on committees and performing various other administrative and clerical duties. As a staff person in the larger community, being conscious of “why we do what we do” is essential.
Potential staff members should understand that they will be expected to devote significant time and energy to their work. The selected staff member will be expected to take responsibility for their self and should feel comfortable with working without excess direction while still remaining accountable to the community.
Candidates should be prepared to commit to working at the school throughout the school year and will hav3e opportunites to conduct summer and after school programming depening on candidate's interests and availablity.
